Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT)

Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELT) is a minimally invasive ultrasound-guided technique used for treating varicose veins using laser energy commonly performed by a surgeon. The treatment uses a optical fiber inserted into the vein to pass laser light (infrared) to shrink the vein and attempt to restore normal function of the vein or artery.

Treatments

The ELT technique is used not only to treat superficial or unsightly veins, but also to improve critical circulatory requirements of veins throughout the legs. Further benefits of an ELT procedure include a reduction in the recurrence of varicose veins, a reduction in complications due to lack of blood flow, no general anesthesia required, less painful than surgery, minimal recovery period, and very minimal to nonexistent surgery scarring.

Evaluation
  • During your consultation, your medical professional will evaluate your specific situation to determine what course of action is best for you.
  • If ELT treatment is determined to be a good fit for you, your next visit will include venous mapping. This includes a session of ultrasound mapping of the affected area. The ultrasound map will allow the team to prepare a comprehensive venous flow map which will show the path of blood flow through abnormal veins. This map will pinpoint where blood flow trouble can begin and make any subsequent procedures very precise.

Follow Up
  • After your treatment, your medical profession will advise what level of activity you can return to and when. Supplemental treatment may include wearing a ‘sock’ or brace that will ensure there is no short-term relapse in affected areas. A common postoperative symptom can include bruising, tenderness, or swelling. The compression sleeve is specifically designed to reduce these symptoms.
  • Typically, there is a follow-up regimen that is used to ensure that your recovery is complete.
